The legendary Hamburg hi-jinks also seem curiously absent, although this may have more to do with the sheer size of the Star Club and the fact that The Beatles were unhappy about spending Christmas away from home. The Kaiserkeller and Top Ten club were little more than bars, with the audience practically sitting on top of the group. The Star Club on the other hand was a much larger affair, with the stage situated at the back of the club behind a dance floor. This would have been a good deal less intimate, with the bulk of the audience situated on the other side of the dance area. But there is also the high likelihood that those who've reminisced fondly about Hamburg tend to remember only the highlights, failing to recall the sheer day-to-day ugliness of what Stu Sutcliffe called 'a human sewer', populated chiefly by those seeking sex, drink and bar fights. And for all we know, John could have been playing all these sets dressed in (as Horst Fascher once recalled) a gorilla suit.
So what about the music? Are The Beatles actually drunk, as some have insinuated? Of course not. One can assume they would have indulged in a few Scotch and Cokes that night, but they are clearly in control. The performances are incredibly tight, with all the parts knitting together perfectly even at the incredible pace set by some of the tracks. Ringo proves himself, as ever, to be the powerhouse of the band, the man who put the 'beat' in 'Beatles'. His drumming never flags for a moment, even with the maximum volume demanded by the club's dimensions. George turns in a succession of neat and inventive guitar solos, only occasionally painting himself into a corner (such as with the horrible, tuneless solo to track 26, 'I Saw Her Standing There'). Paul plays the MC and unleashes some incredible solo vocals, most of which are the clear favourites of the Hamburg audience. Curiously, his bass playing is somewhat muted, lingering mostly on root notes and rarely venturing into the melodic spaces for which he is known. Perhaps he was still perfecting his style, or perhaps he felt his efforts would be wasted on an audience who, in all probability, wouldn't have known a bass line from a washing line.
John, unsurprisingly, is the wild card in the pack. He does sound slightly more tipsy than the others, but one can assume that wouldn't have made too much difference to his performance. Clearly, he has no affection for the audience whatsoever, regarding them with disdain and frequently hurling insults at people (most of which were snipped out of the commercial release). He litters the endings of songs and the spaces in between with dischordant guitar noodling. Lyrics are altered to incorporate references to knickers, negroes and noses - all good stuff of legend. But rising above all this he proves himself to be (in the words of Horst Fascher) 'the greates rhythm guitarist ever'. Pumped up to maximum volume care of the in-house Fender guitar amps, he creates a perfect musical synergy with Ringo, churning out a driving rhythm that is pure rock and roll. If ever Chuck Berry had an apprentice, it was the young John Lennon.
When it comes to slow ballads, the group fares less well. Although the technical facilities at the club were world class for that time, they were still not up to the task of carrying over these gentle tunes to a large, barn-like venue. Paul makes a good job of 'Till There Was You', but is obstructed (in a good-humoured way) by John parotting the words to the song in a silly voice. Other ballads, like 'To Know Her Is To Love Her', sound clumsy and out of tune. And yet there is still an indefinable quality to the music. When John, his voice weary and hoarse from the long hours at the mic, tackles Arthur Alexander's 'Where Have You Been All My Life?' the hairs on the back of one's neck begin to prickle. Though the sound balance is poor, the harmonies patchy and the tempo unsure, the group somehow transform an innoffensive teen ballad into a minor work of art. The sound is crude, but the performance is mythic. The group are stamped with the mark of future greatness.
And when the songs end, The Beatles go back to talking amongst themselves. The audience, only half aware of the miracle they've just witnessed, slurp at their drinks or wander off to take a piss, while the world's greatest band plays on in the background. And that is the magic and charm of the Star Club tapes - the paradox of greatness in an utterlly mundane setting.

The angel of good fortune does indeed inhabit Las Vegas. My turn came when I was offered a ticket to see Love, the Cirque Du Soleil’s fabulous celebration of The Beatles – the greatest rock band ever – in a visual extravaganza of aerial ballet, dynamite dancing, stunning staging, wild costumes and, of course, the songs that rocked the world.

Paul McCartney was in town to perform the same week Love marked its fifth anniversary. Reports surfaced that he would appear at the Mirage as part of the festivity. And Paul did not disappoint the hundreds of fans who lined the ropes in the casino, although a security cordon kept them from the area where dozens of photographers waited beneath bright lights as ticketholders made their way inside the theatre.

A buzz swept the crowd, but it was only Carrot Top, the comedian. Guitarist Rusty Anderson was recognized as he walked by and smiled. Paul emerged from the Baccarat Lounge and waved as fans cheered. Sean Lennon was spotted and there was George Martin. Flashes brightened the press area as photographers clicked away, then packed up. Near the ticket booth, as the crowd thinned, I watched as Slash strutted into the theatre. Nearby were two young guys in Beatle shirts; one strummed an Epiphone guitar. That’s when the angel appeared and extended a handful of tickets: “Anybody want to see the show?” she asked.

I heard Ringo’s voice as I was escorted from usher to usher. On tour in Europe, Ringo sent his onscreen greetings. The lights dimmed, and I started down a stairway. Suddenly, a spotlight lit a couple to my right. I stopped in my tracks. About six feet away, sat Sean and Yoko Ono, stylish in a feathered white hat and dark sunglasses. The spotlight then swept to the next row where Paul sat with Nancy, his fiancee, along with George Martin, his wife, and son Giles. “Let’s hear it for George!” shouted Paul cheerfully.

The last time I was this close to Paul was when I saw The Beatles in Memphis. I sat behind the stage, about ten feet from Ringo’s head. I kept shouting for a drumstick, without luck. When Paul turned and looked us over, I waved. He waved back. I had made contact with a god. Now I hovered on the carpeted stairs but dashed for the third row.

The show was incredible, rich with poignant moments. When George’s “Here Comes the Sun” floated through the theatre a large, bright globe magically appeared. John’s voice singing “A Day in the Life” was emotionally moving. What were Paul’s thoughts I wondered? Was he recalling the recording sessions? Thinking of his mates?

After the performers took their bows, the famous walked onstage. Paul effusively praised the cast and production. “Let’s hear it for The Beatles” he said. Yoko took the mic from him and thanked Olivia Harrison, who appeared elated by the show. Olivia had carried on George’s early enthusiasm for the production. Sean, Dhani Harrison, George and Giles Martin stood quietly as applause filled the theatre.

When the lights brightened, there were the young fans. Like me, they had sat in Paul’s VIP section. Blake, 15, and Austin, 16, were from Houston, visiting Vegas with their parents. When they are 64, they will still recall with awe the night they saw a spectacular show, a musical genius, and a Vegas angel.

Dear John,

I remember when we first met, at Woolton, at the village fete. It was a beautiful summer day and I walked in there and saw you on stage. And you were singing Come Go With Me, by the Dell Vikings, but you didn’t know the words so you made them up. Come go with me to the penitentiary. It’s not in the lyrics.

I remember writing our first songs together. We used to go to my house, my dad’s home, and we used to smoke Ty-Phoo tea with the pipe my dad kept in a drawer. It didn’t do much for us but it got us on the road. We wanted to be famous.

I remember the visits to your mum’s house. Julia was a very handsome woman, very beautiful woman. She had long, red hair and she played a ukulele. I’d never seen a woman that could do that. And I remember having to tell you the guitar chords because you used to play the ukulele chords.

And then on your 21st birthday you got 100 pounds off one of your rich relatives up in Edinburgh, so we decided we’d go to Spain. So we hitchhiked out of Liverpool, got as far as Paris, and decided to stop there, for a week. And eventually got our haircut, by a fellow named Jurgen, and that ended up being the Beatle haircut.

I remember introducing you to my mate George, my schoolmate, and getting him into the band by playing Raunchy on the top deck of a bus. You were impressed. And we met Ringo who’d been working the whole season at Butlins camp he was a seasoned professional but the beard had to go, and it did.

Later on we got a gig at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, which was officially a blues club. We didn’t really know any blues numbers. We loved the blues but we didn’t know any blues numbers, so we had announcements like Ladies and gentleman, this is a great Big Bill Broonzy number called Wake Up Little Suzie. And they kept passing up little notes “This is not the blues, this is not the blues. This is pop.” But we kept going.

And then we ended up touring. It was a bloke called Larry Parnes who gave us our first tour, I remember we all changed names for that tour. I changed mine to Paul Ramon, George became Carl Harrison and, although people think you didn’t really change your name, I seem to remember you were Long John Silver for the duration of that tour. Bang goes another myth.

Wed been on a van touring later and we’d have the kind of night where the windscreen would break. We would be on the motorway going back up to Liverpool. It was freezing so we had to lie on top of each other in the back of the van, creating a Beatle sandwich. We got to know each other. These were the ways we got to know each other.

We got to Hamburg and met the likes of Little Richard, Gene Vincent I remember Little Richard inviting us back to his hotel. He was looking at Ringo’s ring and said, I love that ring. He said, I’ve got a ring like that. I could give you a ring like that. So we all went back to the hotel with him. (We never got a ring.)

We went back with Gene Vincent to his hotel room once. It was all going fine until he reached in his bedside drawer and pulled out a gun. We said Er, we’ve got to go, Gene, we’ve got to. We got out quick!

And then came the USA New York City where we met up with Phil Spector, the Ronettes, the Supremes, our heroes, our heroines. And then later in L.A., we met up with Elvis Presley for one great evening. We saw the boy on his home territory. He was the first person I ever saw with a remote control on a T.V. Boy! He was a hero, man.

And then later, Ed Sullivan. We’d wanted to be famous, now we were getting really famous. I mean imagine meeting Mitzi Gaynor in Miami!

Later, after that recording at Abbey Road. I still remember doing Love Me Do. You officially had the vocal Love Me Do but because you played the harmonica, George Martin suddenly said in the middle of the session, Will Paul sing the line love me do? The crucial line. I can still hear it to this day you would go Whaaa whaa, and I’d go love me doo-oo. Nerves, man.

I remember doing the vocal to Kansas City well I couldn’t quite get it, because it’s hard to do that stuff. You know, screaming out the top of your head. You came down from the control room and took me to one side and said, You can do it, you’ve just got to scream, you can do it. So, thank you. Thank you for that. I did it.

I remember writing A Day in the Life with you, and the little look we gave each other when we wrote the line “I’d love to turn you on.” We kinda knew what we were doing, you know. A sneaky little look.

After that there was this girl called Yoko. Yoko Ono. She showed up at my house one day. It was John Cage’s birthday and she said she wanted to get hold of manuscripts of various composers to give to him, and she wanted one from me and you. So I said, “Well it’s OK by me, But you’ll have to go to John.”

And she did

After that I set up a couple of Brennell recording machines we used to have and you stayed up all night and recorded Two Virgins. But you took the cover yourselves nothing to do with me.

And then, after that there were the phone calls to you, the joy for me after all the business **** that we’d gone through was that we were actually getting back together and communicating once again. And the joy as you told me about how you were baking bread now, and how you were playing with your little baby, Sean. That was great for me because it gave me something to hold on to.

So now, years on, here we are. All these people. Here we are, assembled, to thank you for everything that you mean to all of us.

"Perhaps the most puzzling aspect of the LP was the time it had taken to see the light of day. Yellow Submarine. albeit a highly successful film in both critical and box-office terms, had been on release for all of seven months before this (supposedly) accompanying soundtrack album was issued. The songs themselves were even older."
The Beatles were mildly criticised at the time of this LP release for giving less than their usually excellent value-for-money. Lovely though George Martin's score was, fans of the group were having to buy a full price album for just four "new" songs by the group (even the most recent was 11 months old), two of the six titles-'Yellow Submarine' itself and 'All You Need Is Love' - having long been released. The group evidently took the criticism to heart, for there remains in the EMI library a master tape for a seven-inch mono EP, to run at LP speed, 331/3 rpm, complied and banded on 13 March 1969 by Abbey Road employee Edward Gadsby-Toni, with the following line-up: Side A 'Only A Northern Song', 'Hey Bulldog'; 'Across The Universe' . Side B: 'All Together Now'; 'It's All Too Much' . (Note the bonus inclusion of 'Across The Universe', long finished and mixed but, as of March 1969, still awaiting issue on the World Fund charity album.)"

Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world. Performers know the city has appreciative audiences, especially for rock artists. Saturday afternoon was no exception when fans lined up inside the Cannery Casino to fill the theatre where Peter Asher hosted a concert in memory of singing partner Gordon Waller. Peter organized a great show with help from rock stars who were part of the British Invasion, proving that Peter and Gordon remain indelibly etched in the memories of music fans with famous songs like “World Without Love,” “Woman,” “Nobody I Know,” “I Don’t Want to See You Again,” and “Lady Godiva.”

Gordon Waller passed away in 2009 and, as Peter told the crowd, he wasn’t sure if hecould ever sing their songs again but, thankfully, Peter organized a dazzling tribute to his longtime partner. Peter’s voice filled with emotion as he spoke of his friend and colleague, but the range of emotions was broad as he recounted Gordon’s sense of humor, the likely reason for his friendship with Ian Whitcomb – “You Turn Me On” – who brought laughs with his comedic singing. Performers recounted how Gordon Waller’s idol was Elvis, so it was a fitting tribute that D.J. Fontana, Elvis’s drummer, took the stage as Spencer Davis and Denny Laine rocked the theater with Elvis songs, and both received thunderous applause when they sang their own
hits “Go Now” and “Gimme Some Loving.” Terry Sylvester of the Hollies also pleased fans with the band’s great songs, including his favorite, he noted, “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.” John Walker, of the Walker Brothers, captured the audience with his powerful voice as he sang “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore,” with his wife Cynthia on backing vocals. Chad and Jeremy were equally as mesmerizing with flawless harmony in their classic tunes “Yesterdays Gone,” “Summer Song,” and “Willow Weep for Me.” But the most poignant performance occurred when Peter Asher closed the show. As monitors projected clips of Peter and Gordon in their heyday, Peter recounted how Paul McCartney, while living at the
Asher home in London, had shown him a song that “John or somebody didn’t like.” The song was “World Without Love.” On the monitors the original McCartney handwritten lyrics were shown and still exist in his personal archive Peter explained. But Paul said the song was unfinished because the bridge or “middle eight,” as The Beatles called it, had yet to be written. The monitors next showed McCartney’s completion, the bridge section written in red ink, “like it was an emergency,” quipped Peter. After thirty years, the duo agreed to reunite in a benefit for Mike Smith, lead singer for the Dave Clark Five, who was tragically paralyzed in an accident in 2003. Despite the long hours, the performers graciously participated in a Vegas custom – a “meet and greet” with admirers. I asked Denny Laine if the show would be anywhere else.
He shook his head, “No, we discussed that and decided it would be a one time event.” The show was taped so perhaps it will be broadcast, but those who saw it live witnessed a world of love for Gordon Waller.

For those not familiar with it, it is also known by some as the "East Coast" version. It is identical the "regular" US stereo version of the Rubber Soul LP in every way except that it has a layer of reverb across the entire album.

That's right. . . .Capitol reverb across the whole LP!

It is not dramatic, but it is very noticeable on specific songs where the vocals are completely or partially isolated.

Songs like "Girl" and "Wait" are particularly noticeable. .

It can be heard clearly on a song like "Think For Yourself," which normally ends cold and dry.

On the "Dexterized" version, there is a very definite echoey decay on that last note. . .

The Concert for Bangladesh

The Concert For Bangladesh was the event title for two benefit concerts organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, held at noon and at 7:00 p.m. on August 1, 1971, playing to a total of 40,000 people at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Organized for the relief of refugees from East Pakistan (now independent Bangladesh) after the 1970 Bhola cyclone and during the 1971 Bangladesh atrocities and Bangladesh Liberation War, the event was the first benefit concert of this magnitude in world history. It featured an all-star supergroup of performers that included Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Billy Preston, LeonRussell, Badfinger, and Ringo Starr.

The concert raised US$243,418.51 for Bangladesh relief, which was administered by UNICEF. Sales of the album and DVD continue to benefit the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF.

Ravi Shankar and the sarodist Ali Akbar Khan opened the concert with recital of Indian music consisting of the dhun, "Bangla Dhun".

Except for back-up roles in support of both the Delaney & Bonnie Blues Band and John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, it was the first live appearance for George Harrison since the breakup of The Beatles. Eric Clapton made his first public appearance since the end of the five-month Derek and the Dominos tour the previous December. Clapton was still in the grip of a heroin addiction, and had been unable to attend any rehearsals until the final soundcheck. This was the first live performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and may have been the first time the general public was made aware that it was Clapton who played the solo on The Beatles' recording.

Musical help was also on hand from Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Klaus Voormann, Jim Keltner, Badfinger, a large horn section put together by Jim Horn and other musicians, including Carl Radle, Jesse Ed Davis, Don Preston and a host of backing singers organized by Don Nix.

Bob Dylan made his first stage appearance since the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1969. Apart from sitting in for a few numbers with The Band on New Year 1972 and an unannounced appearance backing John Prine on harmonica at a Greenwich Village club, he did not play live again until January 1974.

The songs played and their sequence differ slightly between the afternoon and evening show.

George had invited John, Paul and Ringo. Paul declined, saying that the time wasn't right for a Beatles reunion, Ringo accepted as did John, at first, until he realised the invitation to perform did not extend to Yoko !

In 1989, John Lennon's jukebox surfaced in an auction of Beatles memorabilia at Christie's, and was sold for £2,500 ($4,907) to Bristol-based music promoter John Midwinter. Lennon had apparently bought the jukebox – specifically a Swiss KB Discomatic – in 1965, and filled it with forty singles to take with him on tour. Midwinter spent several years restoring the box and researching the discs catalogued in Lennon's spidery handwriting. When Midwinter developed cancer, and his health began to deteriorate, his desire to see the player featured in some kind of documentary became all the more important.

The story finally reached its wider public in 2004, when The South Bank Show broadcast a documentary on the jukebox in which many of the represented artists, along with Sting, were asked to comment. Developed by Steve Jansen for the UK television production company Initial, headed by Malcolm Gerrie, the project took longer than was hoped to get picked up. This fact was rendered all the more poignant in that the show was commissioned mere days after Midwinter died. A compilation album was also released, containing thirty-four of the singles' A-sides and seven of their B-sides

US 18 to North 8th Street north in Clear Lake for 4.7 miles. When the paved road (which has turned into Grouse Avenue) turns left (west), go right (east) on gravel road (310th Street), then immediately left (north) on Gull Avenue. Follow Gull Avenue for 1/2 mile, just past the grain bins to t-intersection of a gravel road from the right and first fence row on left (west). The fence begins at the street sign for "Gull Ave." and "315th St."(Look for large Buddy Holly glasses) Walk along the fence row west for just under 1/2 mile.

It was just another Iowa soybean field before the plane carrying Buddy Holly crashed there. Now, to fans, it's hallowed ground.

Ken Paquette, who lives in Portersfield, Wis., 50 miles north of Green Bay, wanted something permanent at the exact location of the crash. "People didn't know exactly where it was," said Paquette, a 50's era fan. "There were flowers scattered all along the fence line. I thought there should be something there."

Paquette made a stainless steel guitar and a set of three stainless steel records. On the guitar are the names Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper, along with the date of the crash, 2/3/59. On the records, there are the names of the recording labels and the big hits for the three artists: "Peggy Sue" on Coral, "Donna" on Del Fi and "Chantilly Lace" on Mercury.

The memorial is located on private property. Visitors are asked to respect their rights while visiting "The Place The Music Died."

Four trees were also planted along the fence row in 1999, one for each performer and the pilot.

Why Radio: I have loved radio all of my life - Music, sports, Radio shows the theater in the mind experience etc…

Why The Beatles: I have collected Beatles music, records, 45 records (singles) books, posters etc. for over 30 years

How did you get started: a friend told me I should start a radio station with Live365

How did you settle on your format : I have listened to different Beatles radio stations on the Internet and all they are playing is The Beatles - as great as that sounds, it is actually is very unoriginal. I could do that kind of programming on my mp3 player. I started thinking about what the Beatles would play if they could run their own radio station. They would play songs by an artist that had influenced them – Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Eddie Cochrane and many more. I also thought of all the bands The Beatles have affected like ELO, Elvis Costello, Badfinger and plenty more . Before I knew it, my radio playlist format outline was starting to take shape – so I added some Interviews of The Beatles, some novelty songs and it all started to sound pretty good to me.

What has the feedback been from the listeners: It was very slow at first and then the support started coming in from around the world – Fab 4 Radio is currently being listened to in over 50 countries. I receive email song requests and thank you notices from all over. Fab 4 Radio has received plenty of key support from different Beatle related web pages. Fab 4 Radio has supported all kinds of new artists influenced by The Beatles.

I'M LOOKING THROUGH YOU - There are two false starts to this song, from the US Rubber Soul album
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE - This mix is presented as an alternate Brazilian mix coming from a rare Brazilian single
ALL MY LOVING - This mix (available in mono & stereo) features a 5-tap hi-hat intro and an intake of breath. It was issued in Germany and Holland.
AND I LOVE HER - This alternate mix was issued on the german release of "Something New" (Odeon SMO 830 756)
THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO - a rare Australian mono mix.

When the Paul McCartney's RAM album was released in stereo on May, 1971, the mono LP was pressed primarily for promotional purposes for airplay on AM radio stations. A statement from the family of Neil Aspinall

Neil Aspinall, The Beatles' friend, guide and Apple mastermind, has died.
One of the great legends of the music business, Neil Aspinall, has died in New York after a brief illness and a glorious life.
He was 66. His wife Suzy and his five children were with him as he passed over.
Neil Aspinall was the man who was closer to all of The Beatles than anyone. Under his creative and caring direction, The Beatles business phenomenon and its trademark Apple transcended far beyond the Sixties.
He was the Beatles' friend who became their roadie who became the chief of their empire and the unassuming, modernising mastermind behind the band's enduring appeal and influence for four generations.
Although he would deny it, he was long considered to be "the real Fifth Beatle" by the music and entertainment industries which for 40 years revered and respected him as one of the wisest men in the record business.
Today Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr paid tribute to "a loyal friend and a great man".
In a statement on behalf of Paul, Ringo, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, Apple Corps said today: "The Beatles and the entire Apple Corps family, both past and present, wish to extend their greatest sympathy to the family of Neil Aspinall. As a loyal friend, confidant and chief executive, Neil's trusting stewardship and guidance has left a far-reaching legacy for generations to come. All his friends and loved ones will greatly miss him but will always retain the fondest memories of a great man".
Neil was born in October 1941 to Liverpool parents evacuated to Prestatyn, North Wales. He was the Liverpool schoolboy who became pals with Paul McCartney and George Harrison at the Liverpool Institute for Boys, where together they formed the 'Mad Lad' gang, sharing cigarettes behind the sheds, "doing ridiculous things together" and, as teenagers, adding John Lennon to the Mad Lads.
Although he studied for and briefly became an accountant, when his friends later formed The Beatles with Pete Best and then Ringo Starr, Neil joined the gang that was to change the world. Always he was right at their side; as their first road manager and driver of their old Commer van, then as The Beatles' minder, spotlight operator, confidante, fixer, personal assistant and their mate.
In a rare interview, Neil once said "People used to say to me then 'What do you do?' I'd stopped being an accountant or pretending to be one by this time and I said 'I drive the band around' and they'd say 'Yeah - I know that, but what do you do for a living?' Two years later, the same people were saying 'You lucky git, Neil'".
In 1964 during the making of The Beatles movie 'A Hard Day's Night', Neil met his future wife Suzy. They were married in 1968. Neil was a very proud father and grandfather. ,
Following the death of The Beatles manager Brian Epstein in 1967, Neil was asked by the band to take over the management of their company Apple Corps when it was founded in 1968. Typically, he agreed on condition that he would manage the corporation "only until they found somebody else". He remained the chief of Apple Corps until last year.
Shrewd, innovative and totally-trusted, Neil was the unseen architect of the reinvention of the post-Sixties Beatles, first with The Beatles At The BBC cd in the mid-90s, followed by the record-breaking Beatles Anthology and Beatles 1 albums.
As the keeper of The Beatles flame and protector of their legend, it was Neil who quietly acquired for Apple the Beatles rights back to countless photographs and film footage that enabled the making of the Grammy-winning Beatles Anthology TV and video series and the band's celebrated autobiography.
It was also Neil who masterminded the modern merchandising of The Beatles, notably with the relaunch of The Beatles Yellow Submarine film and CD, making it a bigger success in the 90s than it had originally been in the Sixties. From Let It Be Naked to The Beatles' recent Cirque du Soleil show hit Love, to every Beatles business success since the band broke up in 1970, Neil Aspinall steered the ship - and the submarine - always ensuring the Beatles' strong bond with Liverpool in every venture.
It has been reported that during the last 20 years of Neil's time at the helm of Apple Corps, The Beatles sold in excess of 70 million albums.
Although modest in any claim of his achievements, his quick and dry wit was amused by a comment made in The Observer newspaper during the hugely-successful 1995-96 Beatles Anthology project. The multi-media project, of which Neil was executive producer, once again cemented the Sixties band's dominance of the music scene around the world - "the only band to have become bigger than The Beatles is The Beatles", commented The Observer on the Anthology-led resurgence of Fab.
His friend, Apple aide and ABC TV producer David Saltz said today: "Neil was the most brilliant and inspirational guy that everybody just gravitated around; he had an amazing mind and he was a very groovy guy".
Neil Aspinall's wise, commonsense approach to what he dubbed "not the music business but the Beatles business" commanded great affection and respect in all who had the privilege of working with him but he was an intensely-private and naturally modest man in both his professional and personal lives, never taking a bow himself. Neil avoided all personal publicity and always refused requests for interviews, pointing the credit to the band who made the records.
In The Beatles Anthology Neil said: "My happiest memories of being with the band were some of the laughs that we had backstage and in dressing rooms when nobody else was around and we were swapping jokes together. No big deal, really. It was those little personal things that are my favourite moments. We always had a laugh."
Besides running Apple Corps, Neil created Standby Films with Suzy - makers of the acclaimed 1999 Jimi Hendrix movie, Hendrix: Band Of Gypsys. Neil was also one of the co-founders of Paul McCartney's performing arts university LIPA, now housed in the building of their old school.
Few outside Neil's circle knew of his own talent as a wry artist with coloured inks - but now an exhibition of his previously-never-before-seen work is to be held on a date to be announced.
Neil Aspinall fell ill to lung cancer two months ago. He has been under care at the Sloan-Kettering hospital in New York.
