STAR CLUB TAPES

But I'd stake my life on George's request being 'for Mary' with his scouse accent, not for 'Irwin' or 'Irving'.

And on 'Roadrunner' I think Paul says 'he's a road ranner', in a fake 'posh' or even cockney accent, NOT something about 'Rickenbacker', nice as that would be.

Apparently Erwin is pronounced with an 'ee' sound at the end, so it could be right. Although it does seem rather a co-incidence that John says 'Mary' straight after this. At any rate, it's not really important. I don't think we're ever going to be 100% certain of what is being said. We may have to have a poll on some of the more contentious issues. But at least for the first time we can actually tell what the hell was going on. And I think that, overall, we've done a pretty good job.

I think you're right about the Rickenbacker thing. He seems to say 'He's a roadrunner baby'.

BE BOP A LULA

Voice: Manfred!

Weissleder: Ihr hört doch alle das ich heiser bin, Mensch, nicht (but you all hear that I`m hoarse, man, don`t you?) (sounds almost angry, like being asked to sing but refusing)

Paul: Jetz (now) 'My Girl Is Red Hot'!

Paul: Yeh, yes, it's George's turn to sing. George is gonna play that...

George: Oh no...

Paul: ...number you all know so well... a great favourite of yours - what is it, George?

(Long pause. Someone shouts "Go George")

Paul: And it's George. Say, what are you doing, George?

George: Ein special Wunsch (request)... for all the bums... (or 'mums', or someone's name)... Roll Over Beethoven

John (in spastic voice): STAND UP! (probably meaning "get up and dance!")

ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN

NOTHIN' SHAKIN'

(11). Paul: Danke schon.

George: Thankyou.

Paul: Thankyou very much ladies and gentlemen. It's certainly a pleasure to be playing for you tonight.

John: It's certainly a pleasure...

Paul: It certainly is... oh thankyou very much indeed... it’s a great pleasure.

John (in Scottish accent): Well Paul, what have you got lined up now?

John (in Scottish accent) : We have great pleasure in vamping ... She was just seventeen... a teenage queen... begorra, begorra (Irish exclamation)... crikey.

Paul: You know what I mean...

John (still Scottish): Och, away with ye Paul!

Paul: Och, away!

(Indecipherable off-mic discussion)

I SAW HER STANDING THERE

(12). Paul: Thankyou very much ladies and gentlemen, anyway... very pleased to be playing for you tonight... Dosvedanya (Russian for 'till we meet again')... congratulations.

John (still Scottish): I'd like to congratulate you on a great number Paul...

Paul: Thankyou very much John... I'd like to say thankyou to you... and, as it's Christmas I think you win an award too.

John: We'd like to present Lee with an award though... the BAFTAS.

Paul: Best wishes to Lee Curtis... we're with you Lee... und jetz ein langsam lied (and now a slow song) recorded by the Teddy Bears...

John (camp voice): Oh, the Teddy Beddies!

Paul (faintly): Und jetz...

John: I'll play the song..

(Indecipherable off-mic discussion)

EVERYBODY'S TRYING TO BE MY BABY

(14). (The first three lines are spoken almost simultaneously)

Voice (following extended drum part): Shuttup Ringo!

Paul (to Ringo): You've got a flat note...

John: Thankyou very much...

Paul: And we're gonna switch-

John: I don't know whether you can understand me or not! I don't really know...

Paul (in scouse): Hey, now cut that out... bonjour... bonjour... (faintly) no I've got to... (loudly) we must sing-

John: A great pleasure! I don't know whether you can understand me or not... being foreign and all.

Paul: This next tune is a special request for Icke (Hans Walther-Braun), for a cha-cha-cha, cha-cha-cha, cha-cha-cha.

John (underneath Paul): It's a song for Icke the dicker.

Girl: Paul!

Paul: Jolly good, how are you? (loud guitar chord) ...good evening, you're looking well... A lied (song) which is entitled 'Till There Was You', oh well.

John: (whistles bird-calls)

Paul: As we walk through the garden now, with the beautiful whistle of spotted- (cut off by John)

John: ...pelican in the garden of love.

Paul: One, two, three, four...

TILL THERE WAS YOU

(15) John: I'd like a great round of applause...

John (faintly): ‘Where Have You Been’?

Paul (faintly): I hope you know the words...

John: We'd like to do the one... that the negro said... to the slightly lessered coloured woman, "Where you been, where you been, when I’s-a-been-a-feelin' blue..."

Voice: What? (laughs)

(Long pause)

John: Where's you been?

Paul: Two, three, four...

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?

(16). John and Paul: Okay? Danke schon! Thankyou!

(Long pause with drunks laughing)

Heckler: You're all queer as coots!

John (to heckler): Well we're all straight up here, I don't know about you down there... I just decided to drop a couple of verses off it...

Paul (interrupting): I don't know whether you can understand me or not...

John: 'Cos it was hurting me throat... so I thought (in Scottish accent again) "Where've you been... away!" All right? (John is probably referring to throwing 'away' the refrain before the solo which goes "Oh darling, where have you been?")

Paul (muttering): I don't know whether you can understand me or not...

John: It's George's call but I don't care if he dropped a verse... (probably referring to George coming in early with the guitar solo) I don't know whether you can understand me or not!

Heckler: Sticks and stones!

John: Look, piss off.

Heckler: Talking tough!

John: You got that? Christmas or nothin'... Christmas comes to you... 'Christmas comes but once a year, but when it comes it brings good cheer.'

Paul (faintly): You said it had a drum roll... ?????

(Long pause with faint discussion ????)

Paul: Like to do a request for a... Wunsch lied... Scottish lady, up there? I've forgotten her name, isn't that terrible?

George: I'm disgusted...

A TASTE OF HONEY

(19). Paul: Thankyou very much, ta... thankyou... hello!

Voice: Let's go! Get a hurry on!

Unknown: Ha ha!

Paul: Wir haben ein (we have a) ????

Voices: (laughing)

Paul: I'm not sure... Hey, just 'cos you got a bottle of your own... Wir haben ein Wusch gekriegt von der junge hier... John: ???? Sheridan!

Paul: Ich geb einen aus... (I'll mug you...) watch it mate. He's got a flasche (flask) of whiskey up there...

George: Drunken sod.

John: Give us a flasche ... (probably a pun on 'Give us a flash' as in slang for 'Show us your knickers')

Paul: A Taste Of Honey

A TASTE OF HONEY

(26). Paul: Danke schon. Vielen dank, liebe Gaste, vielen dank... (thankyou very much, dear guest, thankyou)... back to Tony Sheridan!

John (in spastic voice): Vielen dank Tony Sheridan!

Voice: Do 'Money'!

Voice: Ein Wunsch, folks for a song, lied called Money.

(It's unclear what exactly happens here, or even whether Sheridan might have participated somehow in 'A Taste Of Honey'. This might have been a late-night jam session among bands. The drumming definately isn't Ringo, although the guitar sounds a bit like John. The lead vocal is by Bobby Thompson of The Dominos, possibly backed up by members of the Beat Brothers. The Beatles certainly aren't singing).

APPLE JAM  DOES IT AGAIN THESE ARE SOME REAL GEMS!!!
